Story Pitch: A Thai-American young woman struggles balancing their job at the market and their studies at the college for superheroes, which they just transferred to due to their blooming powers. The budding hero moves from their home in the U.S. to Thailand, not only to join the prestigious training grounds for young heroes, but to reconnect with their roots.
The Valkyries, A Superpowered Highschool Girls’ Volleyball Team Project
Leona Firemane
This a character design for a fictional 2d animated show aimed at teen audiences. I would describe the story as Ted Lasso x My Hero Academia. This story centers around a high school’s girls’ volleyball team. This character is Leona Firemane, a Senior who is the team’s Libero.
Marina Bay
It was interesting to revisit this design project after some time away from it. A lot of the challenges I had figured out in Leona had to be thought about differently in Marina, so I went back and forth in her design a lot. One of the biggest issues I had was how to depict her arms, and I went through a lot of iterations before I settled on the current look. Overall, really enjoyed her design process!
Dyna Atlas
Dyna was a hard character for me, as the idea I started with was in a very different direction, and I struggled on how to best showcase her character. I decided to go back to the research phase, and happened upon some insect-based inspiration that led to what her design looks like now.
Jonah Wren
Jonah was a different challenge for me, as all the other characters in this project were part of the volleyball team as players. However, he spawned from the question of: What would other students look like? I still wanted him to be semi-related to the Valkyries, so he developed into the team’s photographer. With the team’s super-powered antics, I knew he needed a way to get some dynamic shots (so hence the wings).
